# AI Competencies and Manager Competencies

## AI Competencies and Manager Competencies are two skill types available in Career Bird.

AI Competencies describe the skills people need to work well with AI in their role. Manager Competencies describe the skills that help people lead others. Both work like any other skill type: they appear in role descriptions, skill surveys and development plans.

**Who can do this:** Org admins.

### Turn them on

AI Competencies and Manager Competencies are turned on for each account. Email [support@careerbird.ai](mailto:support@careerbird.ai) to have them enabled for your organization.

### Add them to your roles

Turning the skill types on doesn't change any existing role. Choose one of these ways to add them:

- **Through your competency model (recommended).** Add the competencies you want to your competency model, for the whole organization or for specific job families, and publish it. They appear on matching roles right away, with the proficiency you set for each level.
- **New roles.** Roles created after the skill types are turned on can include them automatically, within the minimum and maximum you set for each level.
- **Regenerate a role's skills.** On an existing role, open the ⋯ menu and choose **Regenerate skills**. Career Bird rebuilds the role's skills using your current skill types and keeps its description and responsibilities. This replaces the skills already on the role, so use it carefully. To update many roles at once, select them on **Role management \> Roles** and choose **More \> Regenerate skills**. For roles on a track, regenerate from **Role management \> Tracks**.

### Set minimums and maximums

Set how many competencies of each type a role should have at each level. For example, people manager levels might require Manager Competencies while individual contributor levels have none. These limits guide how many skills Career Bird assigns when a role is created or its skills are regenerated. Competencies required by your competency model are always included.

### Build an AI upskilling program

1. Add the AI Competencies you want to your competency model and publish it.
2. Create a group development plan for the people you want to include.
3. When you set up the plan, choose to send a skill survey when the plan starts. This gives each person a starting point.

Pair AI Competencies with the emerging skills agent, which suggests new skills as they appear in your industry, and use skill categories to report on AI skills across departments.
