# Get started with Career Bird: manager guide

## As a manager, you help keep your team's role descriptions current and support each person's growth.

This guide covers the first things to do, in order. You'll get an email for each step as it becomes ready.

**Who can do this:** Anyone with direct reports in Career Bird. Step 1 applies only if your admin assigned you roles to review.

### Step 1: Review your team's roles

If your admin assigned you as a reviewer, check that each role description reflects the responsibilities and skills the role needs today.

1. Go to **Role management \> Roles**. Roles waiting on you show "Needs Review".
2. Open a role and click the banner to start editing.
3. Suggest changes to the title, level, description, responsibilities or skills. Click **Save** or the checkmark as you finish each section. Your changes are kept as suggestions; nothing is published yet.
4. Click **Submit for approval**. Your HR admin reviews your suggestions before the role is published.

If you edit a role again after submitting, submit it again when you're done.

### Step 2: Check your team

Go to **Team management \> My employees** to see everyone in your reporting line. The tiles at the top show how many people need invites, are invited and are active. Your HR admin sends invitations; if someone hasn't been invited, ask your admin.

### Step 3: Take your own skill survey

Taking your own survey first shows you what your team will see. Go to **My career** and open your skill survey.

### Step 4: Complete your team's skill surveys

For each person on your team, you complete a survey on their behalf, sharing your view of their proficiency in each skill. Career Bird uses your answers along with the employee's own to recommend which skills to develop.

1. Go to **Team management \> Skill surveys**.
2. Open a survey that's waiting on you and choose a proficiency level for each skill. The level expected for the role is marked with a star.
3. Add comments where they help, then submit.

Once an employee submits their own survey, you can see their answers on their profile. After you both submit, they can see yours.

### Step 5: Help your team build development plans

A development plan is a set of cards, each pairing one skill with a work project, a goal, learning resources and a due date. You know what work is coming up, which makes you the best person to help choose projects.

1. Open a person from **Team management \> My employees** and select the **Development** tab.
2. Review their plan, or click **Add card** to suggest a card for them.
3. Meet one on one to agree on projects, and leave an encouraging comment on a card to recognize progress.

### What you can see about each person

Open someone from **Team management \> My employees** to see these tabs:

- **Overview:** their role and a progress snapshot
- **Development:** their development plans (when development plans are turned on)
- **Surveys:** every survey they've taken
- **Skills:** their latest survey results
- **Learning:** the learning resources they've saved, started or finished

### If something goes wrong

| Issue | What to check |
| --- | --- |
| Someone is missing from My employees | My employees shows people who report to you in Career Bird. Ask your admin to check that person's manager. |
| You don't see Role management in the menu | That section appears only when you're assigned roles to review. |
| You need to change a survey you submitted | Submitted surveys can't be edited. Issue a new survey from Team management \> Skill surveys. |
| You can't add a card for someone | The person needs to set up their development plan first. |
