What is the skill survey?
The Skill Survey is a self-assessment that helps you:
- Evaluate your current skill proficiency
- Identify strengths and growth areas
- Align with your manager

Why the Skill Survey matters
This is the foundation of your development in Career Bird.
It helps you:
- Understand where you stand today
- Identify where to grow
- Receive personalized learning recommendations
- Align with your manager through calibration
Part 1: taking the skill survey How it works
For each skill, you will:
- Review the skill description
- Rate your proficiency level
- Optionally add comments
Each skill is rated using four levels:
- Foundational – Basic understanding, limited experience
- Intermediate – Can apply the skill with some independence
- Advanced – Strong proficiency, applies skill confidently in most situations
- Expert – Deep expertise, guides others and drives strategy
You can hover over each level in the platform to see role-specific definitions.
Additional context availableFor each skill, you can also:
- Click “Why this matters” → Understand the importance of the skill
- Add a comment → Provide context to your rating
After you complete your survey:
- Your manager will complete the same assessment for you
- This creates a calibration view comparing both perspectives
Part 2: understanding your results Skills summary
At the top of your results, you’ll see a summary of your skills:
- Total skills – Number of skills evaluated
- Exceeding expectations – Skills above the expected level
- On target – Skills meeting expectations
- Growth opportunities – Skills below target level
This gives you a quick snapshot of your performance.
Your skills tableThis section provides a detailed breakdown of each skill:
- Suggested proficiency → Expected level for your role
- Your rating → Your self-assessment
- Manager rating → Your manager’s assessment
- Learning resources → Number of recommended resources
- Comments → Additional context
- If your rating matches the suggested level → You are on track
- If your rating is below → This is a growth opportunity
- If your rating is above → This is a strength
Differences between your rating and your manager’s rating highlight areas for discussion.
Skill surveys historyAt the bottom of the page, you’ll see:
- Completed surveys
- Survey dates
- Status (e.g., completed, awaiting manager review)
This allows you to track your progress over time.
Calibration with your manager
The survey enables a calibration conversation between you and your manager.
Use it to:
- Discuss differences in ratings
- Align on expectations
- Agree on development priorities
