Send, remind and retake skill surveys

The skill survey walks each employee through the skills in their role description.

The employee shares their experience and comfort level with each skill, and their manager shares their view of the employee's proficiency. This article covers how surveys are sent, how reminders work, and what to do when someone needs to update their answers.

Who can do this: Admins can send surveys to anyone. Managers can send surveys to people in their reporting line.

How the survey works

  1. The employee completes their survey.
  2. Career Bird notifies their manager, who completes a survey on the employee's behalf.
  3. Career Bird uses both sets of answers, along with the proficiency the role calls for, to suggest growth opportunities and development plan cards.

Once the employee submits, their manager can open the survey from the employee's profile and see their answers and comments. After both have submitted, the employee sees the manager's answers in the Manager rating column under My skills.

The first survey

  • People added one at a time: Career Bird creates their first survey as soon as they're added.
  • People added by HRIS or CSV import: the first survey is created when the employee starts one from My skills, or when an admin or manager issues one.

Employees can also start a new survey themselves from My skills at any time.

Issue a new survey

  1. Go to Team management > Skill surveys (managers) or Admin > Skill surveys (admins).
  2. Select one or more people.
  3. Click Issue new survey.

Each person gets an email with a link to their new survey.

Reminders

Career Bird reminds people automatically. You don't need to set anything up.

  • Employees get up to two reminders if they haven't finished their survey.
  • Managers get an email when an employee finishes, and a reminder if team surveys are still waiting on them.
  • Employees also get a reminder when their manager has finished but they haven't.

Update answers or retake a survey

A submitted survey can't be edited, and one skill can't be updated on its own. To update answers, issue a new survey. This applies to both employees and managers.

Good times to send a new survey:

  • After a role changes, or someone moves to a new role
  • At the end of a development plan
  • Once or twice a year, to see progress

See past surveys

Every survey an employee has taken is listed on their Surveys tab, newest first, with completion dates.

  • Managers: Team management > My employees > open the person > Surveys. Or click the person on Team management > Skill surveys.
  • Admins: Admin > All employees > open the person > Surveys. Or click the person on Admin > Skill surveys.

Click a completed survey to see that round's answers. The Skills tab shows the latest results.
